Dundalk’s David and Goliath story

From www.explorebaltimorecounty.com, and written by Bryan Sears

Hadfield
Hadfield

Jordan Hadfield knows he’s facing an uphill battle.

Hadfield, 24, said he plans to challenge 10-term State Sen. Norman Stone in next September’s Democratic primary.

“My race is not going to be about me challenging anyone,” Hadfield said. “It’s going to be about a vision. It’s about what needs to be done.”

The Dundalk resident will officially kick off his campaign Sept. 19 with three stops in three different parts of the district, starting with the Boulevard Diner on Merritt Boulevard and ending with a 9 p.m. appearance at Pizza John’s in Essex. (And who doesn’t like a slice of pizza with their politics?)

Hadfield ran unsuccessfully for the State Democratic Central Committee in 2006 and worked to help get Stone re-elected.

The Dundalk resident, who served as the first main street manager for the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation, said 40 years of declining jobs at area steel mills, increased crime, sex offenders and historic communities with 42 percent home ownership are problems that need to be solved. Hadfield said he sees the position of state senator as the political head of the community — and should be a leader in solving those problems.

“We can’t wait another 10 years,” said Hadfield, who holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and is working on completing his doctorate in public policy. (Hadfield also works at the university in the development office — a job he said he would have to give up if he wins the senate seat.)

“We keep being told that the 35,000 jobs at the steel mill aren’t coming back,” Hadfield said. “Why haven’t we tried to get new businesses here, find new jobs to bring here? People who have jobs can take care of their families and don’t mess around.”

Stone is the longest serving member currently serving in the state Senate.

Hadfield represents the first primary challenge for Stone since 1998. In that election Anthony Narutowicz, a Democratic Central Committee member from Dundalk,  unsuccessfully challenged Stone for the seat.

Hadfield began raising money last year. So far he has raised about $9,000 and has about half that on hand. He estimates he will need about $50,000 to run a competitive race against Stone, who reported having about $25,000 on hand in January.

Hadfield said he expects Stone will ultimately have “as much money as he needs.”

“No amount of money is going to win this election,” Hadfield said. “One million dollars is not going to make a candidate go door-to-door meeting as many peple in the district as possible. I plan to go through as many pairs of shoes as possible. I’ll be able to get a shoe endorsement deal — I’ll know which brands are the best.”

Bread & Cheese Creek Clean Up, Saturday Sept. 12th

Let’s clean it up!
A community member, and resident of Plainfield Road, John Long, is spearheading an effort to clean-up a local waterway, Bread and Cheese Creek. The short version is: the clean-up will run from 8 am – 2 pm Saturday, September 12. Come for all or part of that time. All materials, food, and drinks will be provided. Meet at the bridge on Plainfield Road.

More info about Bread and Cheese Creek:
The creek emerges near Eastern Ave and flows about 2 miles east under Merritt Blvd, North Point Road, and 695 to Back River. Because of the amount of paved surface (roads and retail parking) in the creek’s watershed, Bread and Cheese Creek carries more than its fair share of trash. (Search Bread and Cheese Creek on YouTube to find videos of sections of the creek).
Word is that the name comes from that of rations eaten by the Maryland Militia travelling along the creek during the War of 1812. They would hide in the woods along the creek to take cover while their sharp shooters harassed the advancing British Troops under Major General Robert Ross. And we can all be proud of our local history: the British were ultimately prevented from entering Baltimore by General Stricker and his men in 1814.

Sept. 11 commemoration is returning to park

From the Dundalk Eagle at www.dundalkeagle.com

Collection for troops precedes annual event

by Heather Perlberg

The annual Sept. 11 event – canceled last year on account of bad weather – will return Friday evening to the gazebo in Heritage Park.
The commemorative ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. and include a prayer service, a presentation by honor guards and patriotic music. A candlelight vigil will be held at dusk.
A collection of items for overseas troops will take place in the afternoon preceding the event.
“We’ve had the memorial service every year since 9/11,” event coordinator Don Kellner said. “I just think we’ve got to keep a hold for us and our kids. 9/11 is a day we should always remember.”
Performers including Joe Dicara, the Star-Spangled Chorus of Dundalk, the Sparrows Point High School orchestral group and Calvin and Malvilyn Statham will sing and play patriotic and spiritual tunes throughout the evening.
Patapsco High School’s Junior ROTC, the World War II Veterans of Dundalk and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 451 have been selected as the program’s honor guards, according to Patricia Herman, a member of the 9/11 event committee.

Memorabilia such as newspaper clippings and a large girder from the World Trade Center will be on display.
Kellner obtained the girder by writing a letter to the mayor of New York after the tragedy and asking if there was anything the community could get for a 9/11 tribute. Twelve remnants of the building were given out, this one shipped UPS from New York to Dundalk, according to Kellner.
“When people touch it, it is moving,” said Kellner of the girder, which weighs about 500 pounds.
From 3 to 7 p.m,, members of the Dundalk Heritage Parade Committee will be in the park collecting nonperishable, pre-packaged food items to be sent to troops overseas. No homemade, glass or aero-sol items will be accepted. The National Guard has asked for 2010 calendars, as well, Kellner said.

Bring a chair or blanket and a candle and flag. For more information or a full list of items acceptable for donation, call Donald Kellner at 410-285-5020.

I’m Getting Hitched in 8 days!

What are your wedding memories, highlights, and stories from Dundalk?

So, I am getting hitched in 8 days and it made me think about Dundalk and the weddings that I have been to or been a part of.  My fondest memory is one that is faint, but I remember enough of to smile.  I was between and 3 and 6 years old and my Uncle Rodney and Aunt Lynn were getting married at the Patapsco Methodist Church on Mornington Road.  I got to be the ring bearer and I had an awesome black tux with a turquoise blue vest and bow tie..it was the 80’s so this was cool.  My entire family was there and my Uncle Rod and Aunt Lynn had a blast.  My Mom always says that it was one of the few times in her life where she saw everyone doing the alligator (everyone is dancing so much and having so much fun, they do the move from Animal House where everyone is laying on their backs with their feet and hands in the air).  The reception was at the Del Capri (i think) and afterward everyone went straight to my Uncle’s house on Cornwall (he had a single family home with an in ground pool at the time) and continued the party into the night.  I don’t really remember the party, but I hear it was pretty epic.

Another memory that comes to mind is when I proposed to Erica, my fiancee, at our favorite walking spot in Dundalk, Heritage Park.  I set up over 5000 christmas lights with some friends on the coldest day of the year in 2008, January 25th.

It was below 30 degrees majority of the day we were setting up and wind gusts got up to 20 miles per hour.  It was really fun (hahahaha).

Shameless Plug for Erica's Sister, Ashley and her Photography Business

But, seeing her surprised at the lights, the sign, and everything else was certainly worth it.

This hatch on the floor looked like the one from "Lost", so we improvised excitement!

If you want more of the story, just let me know.
