Raising Our Voices For The Arts In Dundalk!

Celebrating Song in the Town Renowned for Singing

Baltimore Art & Music Project proudly presents the second annual a cappella showcase, “Dundalk-appella 2” – featuring nationally renowned, local area singing groups…most with a strong Dundalk connection.

With a wide array of purely vocal musical styles, Dundalk-appella 2 will prove to be another genre-defying evening that inspires and uplifts. The rave reviews from last year’s inaugural a cappella experience guarantee an amazing evening for the whole family.

Dundalk has a venerable history as a “hot bed” of vocal music talent. The Chorus of the Chesapeake, founded by Dundalk’s own Bob Seay, has garnered two international barbershop championships. The Dundalk Sweet Adelines, co-founded by his wife Helen, also won the women’s top international award. Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts boasts an incredible vocal music program which has won numerous national and local awards, and has produced hundreds of talented musicians and vocalists. “Whole Lotta Harmony,” a group of young women who recently graduated from Patapsco and sing with the Dundalk Sweet Adelines won this year’s prestigious “Rising Star” award from Sweet Adelines International. I could go on.

The impetus behind Dundalk-appella came from two local vocalists who wanted to lift the spirits of the community with song, while demonstrating the many and varied styles of a cappella singing. Kathy Seay (Helen & Bob’s daughter) put the idea into action and created an event that is the buzz of the town. She has gathered together some of the best vocal groups in the Baltimore/DC area to raise money for youth arts programming in Dundalk through the Baltimore Art & Music Project.

Just last week, Ports America Inc. agreed to sponsor the event and will be collecting items at the door – non-perishable food and new toys – for families in our community who are in need this winter. This is a great example of two organizations working together, leveraging their resources, and providing service to the Dundalk community.

A Fitting Tribute to Helen & Bob Seay

Dedicated in Memory of Helen & Bob Seay
Dundalk’s A-Cappella Pioneers.

At the end of World War II, a young couple – Helen & Bob Seay – reunited and planted roots in Dundalk, where they raised their family for 53 years. Helen was an accomplished musician, and Bob loved to sing.

Naturally, their home was filled with music, and each of their five children learned to play at least two instruments. But singing and harmonizing was a routine part of everyday life in the Seay household.

Shortly after joining the Dundalk Community Chorus in the early ‘50s, Bob and Helen decided to start their own choruses. Bob founded the Chorus of the Chesapeake in 1954 – which went on to win international championships in 1961 and 1971. Helen co-founded the Dundalk Sweet Adelines in 1956.

Everyone who knows the Seay family is enraptured by their passion for music of all kinds and their special abilities to share it with the rest of us.

Helen & Bob Seay really started something, and we are the grateful beneficiaries.
